Sewing A Nursing Cover

So here is another project I completed that I found off of Pinterest..which I am completely addicted to.
I never thought of sewing or buying a nursing cover, because I'm a stay at home mom, and didn't see myself nursing in public or anything (I'm shy that way, not against it at all)..so it never came to mind.
But then I thought about my 7yr year old and not sure what he would think of me feeding the baby right in front of him. I know some parents would think it's the most natural thing to explain to their kids, but personally I'm not ready to go that extra step with my son. So a cover up would be great for when he's home.

So here's you'll need:
*1 yd of fabric
*D Rings (I used 1 1/4 inch size)
*Corset Boning- (I used 13-14" in length x 1/4" wide)
*thread

Besides buying the 1 yard of fabric, I found a fabric remnant on sale that would serve as the nursing cover straps. You can use the leftover fabric from your 1 yard for the straps, however I thought a contrasting color/design would look better.

1) Have your furry friend help you measure out and cut your fabric 26 x 38". Your finished project will be around 24 x 36" after you sew your seams.

2) Cut your strips for the neck straps. The longer strip measures 31" x 3". The shorter strip will hold the D rings, cut that strip 10" x 3".

3) Pin and sew your strips right down the middle. Once they are sewed down the middle, sew the end of the your long strap shut by simply folding down and inch or so of fabric. For the shorter strap however, place your D rings at the end, fold over your fabric and sew over to enclose your rings. The raw ends of both straps will be sewn into the hem of your large piece of fabric, so you don't have to worry about finishing them.
Here is my shorter strap with the D rings, opposite is the end of the long strap.

4) Set aside your straps and sew a 1" hem around 3 sides of your fabric- leaving the 'top' of your fabric unsewn. The top of the fabric will hold your straps and boning.
My piece of fabric with the sides hemmed.

5) Next, on the unsewn top part of your fabric, fold in about an inch, then sew in about 10" across. Then place your strap (raw end) to that fold and sew to attach. After your strap is attached, insert your boning in to the fold and sew. Your boning will have a definite curve to it, so make sure your curve is facing the right way. The distance between my straps is about 13-14".
Measuring in 10", then placing the strap (raw end) on the fold to sew.

6) Next, sew your other strap on, then finish stitching until the end. I made reinforcement stitches over the straps for extra strength.

See the boning curve? This is the direction you want it to go.
Here is my finished cover. I'm thinking of adding a pocket to it to hold a little washcloth or nursing pads, I haven't decided yet..

This was a pretty simple project. And as for making a cover vs. buying one- this project cost me approx. $16 where as store bought/online covers cost around $34 or more. Also- my fabric was a little on the costly side, hence the price- but you can find fabric for super cheap, therefore cutting the cost more than half.
